"I Want a Sandwich!"

Image
“Dad, you know how a child’s voice can carry!” That’s how Matt started his recap of last week’s early morning flight from a recent work assignment at the D.C. office. He continued to relate how something humorous had occurred on the connecting flight from Atlanta to home. The plane had just reached its optimum elevation, and the attendants were beginning to ask the passengers about their preferences for drinks and snacks. Iconic PB&J Sandwich! Credit: AdobeStock When I used to fly recreationally, I remember the choices for snacks to be limited to a single packet of peanuts or pretzels! According to their website, Delta Airlines offers four choices with fancy names: Lotus Biscoff cookies, MadeGood Chocolate Chip Chewy Granola Bars, SunChips Garden Salsa, and Cheez-It Original Baked Snack Crackers.  Matt estimated that the little person, with a big voice, was about three or four years old. After the flight attendant engaged her about the multiple snack choices, s...

"Heaven Came Down!"

Image
During these days of Advent, I have been thinking about heaven. It’s funny how the mind works. It surprises me in strange ways. I popped into a local eatery on North Grand, Springfield recently. Our daughter and her family think this place has the best burgers in central Illinois. I must admit that their smash burgers and custard are something special. I do savor those crispy fried edges on the double cheese! Don’t tell Monique! Image: Krekel's Custard & Hamburgers I looked up on the tabletop and noticed a catchy advertisement on the napkin holder. It said, “Heaven is a Brown Paper Sack!” And appropriately so, this restaurant does a lot of take-out orders where you will see patrons clutching their brown paper bags filled with burgers and fries. While this isn’t the best food for your health, you can cherish “heavenly thoughts” of delicious greasiness in each bite! There is another notable brown bag establishment that I like on South Grand that stuffs its delicious fried fish ...

A Humble, Beautiful Volunteer!

Image
Once again, nature surprised and delighted me this week! My grandson and I have begun the process of fall clean-up. This will continue for the next two months as the trees complete their cycle of leafing out. While Danny was mulching the early leaves with the rider, I undertook the task of pulling up the fading spring plants from the front planters and the bedding areas in the backyard. Last of the Season! That’s when I noticed a surprise underneath leaves and a cluster of old, dry flowering plants. There it was! A little, humble, and beautiful volunteer purple petunia peeking out of the corner bed. It was like it was begging me to see it and rescue its tender little flower standing tall above a spindly stem. I proceeded to gently dig around the root and pull it to safety! Holding this fragile work of nature gingerly in one hand, I managed to keep it intact as I brought it inside to arrange it into a small vase. With a welcomed drink of water, this perfectly displayed flower of sprin...

The Blame Game!

Image
Wash day is Saturday morning at our house. I returned from a morning meeting  at church to see a curious sight on the kitchen counter. It was a wadded-up Kleenex or two along with this note printed on masking tape that said, “We need to do a DNA test on this surprise…” I suspect that Mrs. K. already had a good idea who had tucked this little problem into his mowing shorts and had forgotten to remove it before the wash!😉 "It's Not Mine!" We were extremely lucky this time that the tissue had held together through the wash and dry cycles. Usually, after such a disaster like this, we have had to sort through our laundered clothes and tediously pick through and gather up a “thousand little pieces” of debris left behind on dozens of otherwise clean garments! It’s never fun when this happens and there are usually unpleasant words spoken by both of us. As “empty nesters,” we don’t have anyone else to blame these days! The culprit clearly has to be one or the other of us since ...

Air, Water, and Sugar!

Image
This is campfire season! September 22 nd was the Autumnal Equinox, the first day of fall. It is also the season of Smore’s! This gram cracker sandwich, made with a Hershey’s chocolate bar and marshmallow, is a favorite anytime of the year! Did you know that Americans consume 90 million pounds of marshmallows annually? That may seem to be a staggering statistic for many, but  I’m not surprised! Some of us think that marshmallows make everything  taste just a little bit better. It’s amazing that something made so simply from air, water, and sugar could be so delicious! A Simple Sugary Sandwich! I like any flavored Jello with mini marshmallows added. In the candy category I’ll eat: Toasted Coconut Covered Marshmallows, Moon Pies, Circus Peanuts, Hostess Snoball cakes, Fluff in homemade fudge, an occasional Peeps at holiday times, and won’t pass up Chocolate covered marshmallow Santas and Easter bunnies! I haven’t tried plant-based Dandies (Kosher, Vegan), but I’m game! However, ...

"Proud as a Peacock!"

Image
Recently, I read about a Peacock problem in Omaha, Nebraska. This caught my attention because we have a couple of close friends who live up there. The news was surprising to me since we made two trips there last year and didn’t see a single Peacock! It seems that this problem has been growing over the last few years and no one knows what to do about it. Aside from being annoyed by the birds’ presence and excrement on personal property, they can also show aggressive behavior that includes incessant screeching throughout the day! Image Credit: Melanie Hughes, unsplash.com Several calls have been made by residents to the Nebraska Humane Society, but they claim to not have the personnel or resources to address what many consider to be an unchecked bird population. The local Humane Society suggests that unless they harm someone or damage property, “Just let them be!” Many years ago, I had my own issues with Peacocks. At that time, I was considering where to attend seminary. I was certain ...

Measure Up!

Image
Monique has just completed a two-and-a-half-day stint with a fourth-grade class. She likes the continuity of substituting in the same class consecutively! This assignment was a bit more challenging though. She was required to teach a math-measuring, specifically geometry, exercise using a protractor. During her twenty-two years in the classroom before retirement, she taught her second graders mathematical concepts on many occasions. However, the math that fourth graders are doing these days looks a lot more like what was done in high school back in the day! Image credit: pixabay.com It's a good thing we have a family math expert in one of our daughters who majored in the subject and taught high school math for 14 years. Michelle usually gets a call for assistance when mother is faced with questions about obtuse and acute angles, tangents along with various geometric shapes. As you can imagine, this is quite “above her pay grade” as an elementary school substitute. This time the dau...

"I Got It! I Got It!"

Image
It’s baseball season for our three Hartman grandsons! We moved beyond practices this week to actual games. It has been fun for Mimi and Poppi to throw the lawn chairs into the car and head out to the ballparks in Athens and Williamsville to watch them. Danny, our fifth grader, has been playing for three years now and is the most experienced. He made us proud during his game by making two great catches defensively and laying down a ground ball on the third-base line for a single and an RBI. Charlie, third grade, has only played one official game and that was last season just before his family went to New Mexico for vacation. He is showing great promise during practices this season and is very eager to build upon last summer’s brief experience. He did a nice job of hitting a strong single during the game this week that resulted in a much-needed RBI for his team. "Awww! I don't got it!!" The youngest brother in the trio is Dawson Michael who is just wrapping up his kinderg...
